An underwater and intertidal archaeological and metal-detector survey in the vicinity of Kilkieran Pier in Kilkieran, Co. Galway, in advance of the proposed pier development project, identified two possible features. One consists of a line of large stones approximately 20m from the pier running south for a distance of approximately 11m. Only one course of stone remains and the average measurements of a stone are 0.8m wide by 0.5m in height. The other feature is approximately 10m to the south-east of the pier and may be the remains of an earlier slipway. It is constructed entirely of stone and is in a state of extreme erosion/damage. Neither of these is to be considered of major archaeological significance. No other features or artefacts of archaeological significance were noted. Numerous metal-detector targets were also identified, all of which proved to be modern debris.
