As part of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Gas Pipeline to the West, monitoring of the excavation for a pipe trench beneath the River Fergus was undertaken. The monitored trench was 3.6m wide and 40m long. Mechanically excavated riverine deposits were scanned visually and a metal detector was used. River silts, alluvial peat and clays were observed. No deposits or features of archaeological significance were found.
