Testing was undertaken at a proposed development site at Circular Road/County Home Road, Roscommon. The assessment was carried out in compliance with conditions included in the grant of planning for the construction of a retail/office building with surface carpark on the site, which was on the southern side of the town. It lay just outside the zone of archaeological potential of Roscommon and c. 350m north-east of the Dominican friary.
Testing, undertaken on 1 June 2002, consisted of the mechanical excavation of six trenches. It revealed a layer of undisturbed peat, 0.75m deep, overlying a soft, wet marl. No features or artefacts of archaeological interest were uncovered.
