An archaeological investigation was undertaken across a greenfield site at Rathwire Upper, Killucan, in June 2001. Nine test-trenches were mechanically excavated across areas of proposed development. Test-trenches throughout displayed mid-brown clay topsoil on average 0.48m deep over yellow-brown boulder clay. Surprisingly little variation was noted in the nature and sequence of the deposits across the site, including an apparent absence of field drains. No features or finds of archaeological significance were revealed.
