2001:941 - BALGEEN 2, Balgeen, Meath

Test-trenches were excavated at Balgeen 2 on either side of a possible cropmark within the proposed motorway corridor. Fourteen test-trenches were excavated south-east of this site within the proposed road corridor, using a mechanical excavator with a grading bucket. Apart from modern drainage features and plough-furrows, nothing of archaeological significance was noted apart from one feature of archaeological potential surviving as a small spread of charcoal-flecked soil at the northern edge of the road corridor at chainage 17230 and designated Balgeen 3. This was noted during topsoil clearance of the areas on either side of Balgeen 2.
