Monitoring was carried out at Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, in November 2000. It is proposed to carry out alterations to and extend an existing bungalow to its east side and to construct a detached garage to the north of a dwelling at Termonfeckin.
The sod and topsoil was removed, and a black, loose, friable garden loam was exposed uniformly along the eastern and northern end of the house. Foundation trenches were excavated into this layer in the area of the extension and garage. The excavated trenches failed to reveal any evidence of archaeological stratigraphy in the area of the proposed development. It would appear that trees had been planted at the eastern end of the present dwelling, as the garden soil contained numerous roots and was very loose as a result. It is possible that features associated with the monastic foundation survive further east of the development, but this area of the site will not be disturbed. Therefore no further archaeological work is required for the proposed development to proceed as planned.
