An archaeological evaluation as carried out prior to the construction of a 10-turbine wind farm on lands at Elginny Hill and Carncoagh Hill, Broughshane. In addition to the turbines, the development will include access tracking, a control station and a permanent met mast.
A number of known and potential archaeological sites have been identified within the development area. The majority of these (ANT 028:029, ANT 028:030, ANT 028:031 & ANT 028:052) have been identified through aerial photography. There are no upstanding remains relating to these sites and it is not certain as to whether these are actual antiquities. Two sites (ANT 028:053 & ANT 028:054), located towards the southern end of the site, consist of the remains of a large enclosure and associated field system. Site ANT 028:053 is laid out over two fields and is formed of interlocking curvilinear and linear banks. The large central curvilinear field/enclosure is best preserved, and the defining bank is more substantial than those elsewhere. There are at least eleven features in the area of the field system. Site ANT 028:054 is less well preserved with two sections of a linear stone and earth bank surviving.
Monitoring of the excavation of the areas of the hardstands, turbine bases, access road, substation and compound was conducted. Topsoil within these areas was removed using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the monitoring.
