Pre-development testing was undertaken at 76 Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, which is located on the southern bank of the River Liffey, in response to planning conditions (Planning Ref.: DSDZ3864/14).
Ten trenches were excavated across the area of the proposed development. All of the trenches were excavated into the rubble backfill of 19th-century made ground. None of the trenches were bottomed as the depth of the backfill exceeded safe parameters for excavation (greater than 2.5m). The concrete floor of a basement was encountered at c. 1.5m depth in Trenches 9 and 10.
There may be an adverse impact on previously unrecorded archaeological features or deposits that have the potential to survive beneath the reclamation levels that cover the site. This would be caused by excavation works associated with the construction of the basement level. It was therefore recommended that all ground disturbances associated with the proposed development be monitored by a suitably qualified archaeologist.
