The development site is situated c. 4km east of Mountmellick and 5km west of Emo. Planning permission was granted for the quarrying of limestone within an area measuring c. 4.5ha, while the first phase of extraction measured c. 100m north–south by 65m. Monitoring took place between 28 and 30 January 2009, with topsoil-stripping being carried out by a mechanical ’dozer. Monitoring revealed the site to consist of topsoil directly sealing geologically deposited strata. No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed.
