The proposed development, a new graveyard, lay c. 1km west of Granard town, in the townland of Granardkill, Co. Longford. The site is the south-west quadrant of a large field. Sixty metres to the west lay the visible remains of a deserted village (SMR 10:78) and to the south a ringfort (SMR 10:79). The existing graveyard of Granardkill was located south-west of the proposed development.
An assessment, including geophysical survey, was carried out on the site. The geophysical survey did not indicate any features of archaeological interest, but, due to the high archaeological potential of the area, a programme of test-trenching was recommended. This was carried out in May 2005. No features or finds of archaeological significance came to light during the test-trenching.
