An assessment of the proposed route of the Mullingar bypass (Lynn-Marlinstown section) was requested by Westmeath County Council. Site A is in the townland of Lynn, originally Lann mic Luach‡in (church of the son of Luachan), derived from the early 7th-century monastic settlement on the shore of Lough Ennell. The site is dominated by the imposing remains of SMR 26:7, a multivallate enclosure situated alongside the existing Old Lynn Road.
Twenty-four test-trenches, with a combined length of 660m (resulting in a total excavated area of 1419m2), were excavated across the total area of Site A. No archaeological features were recorded and no finds were noted within topsoil deposits.
