It is proposed to develop the site at Castlemungret as a County Council graveyard. An assessment was carried out because of its proximity to a variety of SMR sites. Dúchas had recommended that all topsoil-stripping be monitored as the site was large. To facilitate early availability for burial, the first area in which interments are to take place was extensively tested instead. Five trenches were opened using a mechanical excavator with a toothless bucket. These were 2m wide by over 30m long. The ground was reduced to boulder clay. No archaeological remains were uncovered in the test excavations.
