The research and training programme of excavations at Haughey's Fort continued this year. The investigation focused on the terminal of the inner ditch, both to complete previous work in the area (Excavations 1997, 3) and to ground-truth the results of a remote-sensing project.

An area of 271m2 was investigated, mainly around the double series of postholes previously uncovered. A pit, 1.7m in diameter and 1.3m deep, was found to contain Late Bronze Age pottery. A horizon of charcoal-rich soil was also uncovered; it too contained Late Bronze Age pottery, as well as struck flint and burnt bone.
