Trial trenching carried out in 1992 at Leitrim Lodge revealed a 13th- to 14th-century ditch and two burials which had been cut by the ditch (Excavations 1992, 15). Further excavation was recommended if the developers intended to continue in this area. Subsequently it was decided to relocate the new building and a further trench was dug early in 1993 at the west end of the enclosed market garden. The stratigraphy consisted of a made-up black garden soil, 1.2m in depth below which natural gravels were located. The finds were all post-1700 in date with the exception of one piece of 17th-century smooth ware.
