Over a three-day period between 6 and 13 February the writer monitored the mechanical excavation of a number of trial-trenches in advance of the proposed construction of a dam between two glacial ridges at Lackan, Co. Galway. The dam was being erected to alleviate seasonal flooding of a low-lying area approximately 2km east-north-east of Ardrahan village. The most northerly point of the proposed temporary works lies 30m outside the outermost limits of a large multivallate ringfort (SMR 114:150). Some 150m to the east of the southern extent of the proposed works there is a well-preserved univallate ringfort.
Thirteen trenches were excavated by a mechanical digger along the line of the proposed dam. The stratigraphy encountered comprised topsoil over a layer of light brown subsoil, which lay directly on top of natural. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were found.
