Monitoring and test excavation took place during the deconstruction and rebuilding of the Horseshoe Weir and a smaller weir next to Vessey Bridge in Lucan village as part of the River Griffeen Flood Alleviation Scheme.
The area of the two weirs lies within an area of archaeological interest (SMR 17:19) and it was thought that the two weirs might still have retained some early construction features that were older than the construction date of Vessey Bridge of 1771 and that the deconstruction may expose these and impact on any riverbed deposits and in situ archaeology.
Testing was undertaken beside each of the weirs, but no in situ archaeology or early construction features were found. Monitoring work during the deconstruction of the two weirs also did not uncover any early construction features.
