During conservation work on the east castle wall the opportunity was taken to examine the fortification.
The trench, 2m x 2m, exposed cobbles on a metalled surface overlying a shallow ditch running north-south, flanking the wall and containing medieval glazed pottery. The examination of the bastion uncovered a series of ten gun-loops within its walls. A further trench, 2m x 1m, was opened at the rear of the bastion to determine whether there was a return, but neither this nor any other archaeologically interesting feature was found.
