Twelve small trenches were excavated across the line of stone walls in the middle and outer cashels to determine their age and course. Two walls proved to be of ‘modern’ origin, the other indicated a date of medieval or later. Charcoal recovered from beneath the outer cashel wall produced a terminus post quem for the wall of 1375±45 b.p. (UB-2365). The line of the missing part of the middle cashel wall was located, demonstrating that the early 20th-century reconstruction by Lawlor was incorrect.
