Underwater archaeological assessment of the River Nanny in advance of the Northern Motorway scheme focused on the investigation of two stone features identified previously. Site A (upstream of works area) had consisted of three courses of squared stones c. 0.2m by 0.2m in size. The feature stood from the base of the riverbank, and extended over an area c. 3m long. It was covered by c. 0.4m of topsoil. Site A was not apparent during the assessment and could not be investigated. It appears to have been eroded away. A small ford-like feature of river gravels was, however, investigated close to the works area. It did not reveal archaeological features of significance. Several objects of 18th-century and modern date were observed.

Site B consisted of a line of seven closely set stones protruding from the base of the riverbank at a depth of 0.5m. The stones measure 0.6m by 0.3m by 0.3m in size. The topsoil overburden on the riverbank was removed. It revealed a stone fill with some red brick inclusions at a depth that is associated with the stones protruding at the base of the riverbank. A trench was opened across the adjacent riverbed. No objects or features of archaeological significance were revealed.
